Dental Implant & Root Canal Therapy,A Combined Restorative Approach, Clinical Cases: Dr. Wang Yuanjing
A Case Study by Dr. Wang Yuanjing at Chengdu Anyu Dental Implant Hospital
Case Overview
Dr. Wang Yuanjing recently managed a complex anterior restoration case involving both endodontic therapy and implantology. The patient presented with a failing dental restoration and significant structural issues in the upper front teeth.
Clinical Challenge & Procedure
Upon examination, the patient’s existing prosthetic crown was found to be ill-fitting, leading to secondary complications. Specifically:
-
Tooth #11: Suffered from severe dental caries (cavities) and irreversible pulpitis (inflammation of the tooth nerve).
-
Tooth #21: Presented with a vertical root fracture, rendering it unrestorable.
The Treatment Plan:
Dr. Wang devised a dual-approach strategy to save the viable tooth and replace the lost one:
-
Endodontic Therapy: Root canal treatment was performed on Tooth #11 to eliminate infection and preserve the natural root structure.
-
Extraction & Implantation: The fractured Tooth #21 was extracted. Immediately following the extraction, a dental implant was placed into the fresh socket.
-
Immediate Restoration: To ensure the patient left with a functional and aesthetic smile, a temporary crown was fitted immediately after the surgery.
Outcome:
Post-operative follow-ups indicate excellent healing. The patient has recovered well, with the implant integrating successfully and the root canal-treated tooth remaining stable.

What is Root Canal Therapy?
When the soft tissue inside the tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay or repeated dental procedures, a Root Canal is necessary. The dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inner chamber, and seals it. This procedure saves the natural tooth from extraction, maintaining the jawbone structure and chewing function.
What is a Dental Implant?
A Dental Implant is a titanium post that acts as an artificial tooth root. It is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Over time, the bone fuses with the titanium (a process called osseointegration), providing a stable foundation for a replacement crown. Unlike bridges or dentures, implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, offering a long-term, durable solution for tooth loss.
